"I
refuse to believe that man's true nature is evil." GUILTY OR NOT is a provocative and disturbing film. It takes a close look at the life of Mari 'bhai', godfather in one of Bombay's most poverty-stricken slums. The uniqueness of this film lies in the fact that it doesn't present the view of the filmmaker. The only view presented is the view of Mari himself. It is essentially his confession to us, the viewer. A man who has many secrets from the world slowly opens up and reveals the truth of his life, sometimes even to his own surprise. Shot at times with a hidden camera, the film takes us to places where most of us have never been. "No man is born a criminal, circumstances make him one", Mari says, and judging by the state of the world he lives in, there may be some truth to it. But the film makes no attempt to pass a judgement. Proclaiming Mari GUILTY OR NOT is up to the viewer to decide.
